FIREFIGHTERS TUG-OF-WAR CHALLENGE

Tug of War

Premiering in 2009, festival organizers have partnered with volunteers of the Perth-Andover Fire Department to host the Gatherings first “Firefighter’s Tug-Of-War Challenge”.

Based on the traditional rules of Scottish Games Tug-of-war, 5-man pulling teams will compete in best-of-three matches through the morning preliminaries and afternoon finals.

Teams representing 4 Municipalities in the area (Perth-Andover, Grand Falls, Bath and Plaster Rock) will meet that the festival grounds Saturday to compete for 12 months of ultimate bragging rights!

SCOTTISH BACK-HOLD WRESTLING

A real crowd pleaser every year, don’t miss the exciting exhibition of “Traditional Scottish Back-hold Wrestling” offered by athletes from our own Southern Victoria Junior Heavyweights program in Perth-Andover.

Over the centuries in medieval Scotland, this ancient form of wrestling was a popular test-of-strength event at most Highland gatherings.  Matches are usually quickly decided and extremely exhausting for the competitors.

Cheer on your favorite kilted wrestlers and don’t be surprised if a few of the lassies step in to challenge!

MIDDLE SCHOOL RUGBY MATCH

Middle School Rugby

What could be more appropriate than a full day of Scotland’s National sport at the Gathering’s own “Rugby Pitch”.  Thanks in large part to our generous volunteers from the Woodstock Wildmen R.F.C., teams representing several middle school from throughout the Saint John River Valley will meet for a day-long series of matches on Saturday.

For those unacquainted, rugby is very strategic and physically demanding sport that has shown a steady increase in popularity over the years in New Brunswick.

Look for the dust clouds over the festival grounds – the rugby will be very close at hand!
